From Bordeaux and Sonoma, With Love: The Wines of Château Lassègue and Vérité

I can’t resist beautiful wines and a great love story, and my recent Instagram Live chat with Christina and Nicolas Seillan delivered both. A seventh-generation winemaker, Nicolas is the vigneron at Château Lassègue in Bordeaux and manages production with his wife, Christina. Back in the USA, his father, Pierre Seillan and his daughter Hélène are the winemaker and assistant winemaker at Vérité in Sonoma. Both wineries are a joint venture with Jackson Family Wines. And if you ever doubted the power of wine to bring people together, Nicolas and Christina met when he addressed a wine group that she belonged to -- the Yale Law Wine Society.

A Bordeaux You Should Know: Classic & Elegant Château Phélan Ségur

In a world full of fads and gimmicks, there's something reassuring about the classics. And what could be more classic than Bordeaux? I always chuckle when people discuss red blends as if they were some new-fangled invention. Bordeaux, located in the southwest of France, long ago mastered the art of the blend. And one of Bordeaux's most iconic wineries is Château Phélan Ségur. Located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, they are acclaimed for the beauty, balance, and longevity of their wines.  

I recently had the pleasure of learning more about Château Phélan Ségur's fascinating history and winemaking philosophy in an Instagram Live chat with their managing director, Véronique Dausse. Founded in the 19th century, the estate has been owned by only 4 different families. Watch our conversation and tasting on YouTube or IGTV. 



During our chat, I sipped Château Phélan Ségur 2016. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, it is beautifully balanced and vivacious with aromas and flavors of blackberry, plum, cherry and strawberry, with sassy hints of licorice and toast. Available for around $70. 

Sip This: Lassègue Saint Émilion Grand Cru 2016

Trends come and go but Bordeaux is timeless. In a world of ever-changing wine fads, there’s something reassuring about sipping an Old World wine with a long tradition. But don’t mistake tradition for stagnation. Each vintage and each producer has a unique story to tell.

Since being introduced to Lassègue Saint Émilion Grand Cru several years ago, I’ve started to anticipate the subtle variations created in each vintage by that year’s climate conditions at their vineyards on the Right Bank of the Dordogne River. Will the wine be bigger and more robust because of a heat wave? Or more subdued because of cooler conditions? How will Lassègue’s winemaker, the acclaimed Pierre Seillan, adjust the blend in response to those variations? Lassègue consistently impresses me with their ability to create a wine that is an authentic representation of each particular vintage yet remains true to their style and terroir.

Château Lassègue was built in 1738. The striking structure and its 60 acres of vineyards were purchased by the Jackson and Seillan families in 2003.

Lassègue Saint Émilion Grand Cru 2016 ($60) is a blend of Merlot (60%), Cabernet Franc (33%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (7%) from old vines with an average age of 40-60 years. According to the winery, “The 2016 vintage was characterised by a mild and wet winter and spring, followed by warm, sunny and dry conditions from July through harvest.” And “the dry and sunny summer helped the vines to flourish, resulting in perfectly healthy grapes at harvest.” The beautiful balance and vitality of this wine reflects the influence of those ideal conditions.

Luscious and rich but not overwhelming, 2016 Lassègue was aged for 12 months in French oak and has bold flavors of blackberry and plum with tangy pops of black licorice, dark chocolate, espresso bean, sweet clove, and earthy truffles. Vibrant acidity and a minerality that is delicately chalky with a thread of steely flint, make the wine lively and approachable without diminishing its grandeur. This is an exceptionally elegant Bordeaux. 

Sweet and Sophisticated: Dazzle Your Guests with Sweet Wines from Bordeaux

Who says sweet can’t be sexy and sophisticated? I promise you that mouths will water and a chorus of ooh la la’s will be uttered when you serve your guests a selection of elegant sweet wines from Bordeaux this holiday season. Contrary to some widely held misconceptions, sweet wines can be complex and full of finesse. The source of some of the world’s most celebrated and expensive sweet wines, Bordeaux also produces sweet wines that are budget-friendly but absolutely chic and delicious.

Bordeaux may be most famous for their iconic red blends but sweet white wines make up a petite but important 2% of the region’s total production. In Bordeaux, sweet wines are produced primarily from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes. It is incredibly labor-intensive to produce quality sweet wines and while one vine can produce approximately an entire bottle of fine red wine, a vine only yields one glass of sweet wine.


No sugar is added in Bordeaux to enhance the sweetness of the wines; it comes naturally from the selection of perfectly ripened grapes and often from grapes that have been impacted by the poetically named Noble Rot. Officially known as Botrytis Cinerea, Noble Rot is a fungus that infects overripe grapes. A friendly fungus, Noble Rot concentrates the grape’s sugars and flavors but maintains the vital acidity that is needed to keep sweet wines lively and mouthwatering instead of sticky and cloying. Bordeaux’s location off the Atlantic coast in the southwest of France, creates an oceanic climate which is ideal for promoting the growth of the desired Noble Rot.

I recently took a deep dive into a selection of sweet Bordeaux wines via a virtual tasting hosted by Snooth and led by Jean K. Reilly, Master of Wine. Jean praised sweet wines from Bordeaux for their versatility and strongly believes that they shouldn’t just be reserved for special occasions. As Jean said these are “wines you can even have with Tuesday night dinner!” She even mentioned sweet Bordeaux as a surprisingly great match with barbecue. Bring on the baby back ribs and a bottle of sweet Bordeaux! And you really can’t beat the combination of sweet Bordeaux paired with something savory, like a beautiful blue cheese, liver paté, or charcuterie.

While many opt to serve sweet wines with desserts, Jean reminded us that they are called dessert wines because they were originally intended to BE the dessert and not paired with sweets. I agree. I often prefer to savor a glass of sweet wine at the end of a meal instead of a pastry. Because we sip sweet wines more slowly, remember to serve sweet Bordeaux wines icy cold. And to keep them from warming up too quickly, Jean recommends adding a piece of frozen dried ginger, mango, mandarin, or pineapple to the glass. Not only do these fruits mirror some of the aromas and flavors found in sweet Bordeaux, they will keep your wine cool without diluting the flavor. Sweet Bordeaux can also be used to make cocktails. Jean recommends mixing them with brown spirits or bitters like Amaro.

Château des Arroucats Sainte Croix du Mont 2017 ($14)
A blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon, this sweet wine from one of the most respected wineries in the appellation delivers plenty of bang for your buck. Exotic and spicy aromas with flavors of dried orange rind, spicy fruit cake, and orange liqueur.


Château Loupiac-Gaudiet 2016 ($17)
A big and luscious blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon, it is bold and fresh with flavors of marzipan, ginger candy, and honey.

Château Cousteau Cadillac 2016 ($18) 
Crisp and rich but impressively fresh and fruity with charming flavors of dried tropical fruit. Blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon.

Château du Cros Loupiac 2016 ($21)
A supple, velvety and fresh blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc. Rich flavors of candied fruit and peach with a hint of spice.

Sip Like a Sommelier: Yannick Benjamin is Captivated by Côtes de Bordeaux

Sommelier extraordinaire and Côtes de Bordeaux enthusiast Yannick Benjamin

Ah, Bordeaux. So famous yet still so misunderstood. Bordeaux may be best known for legendary wines with jaw-dropping prices but that isn't a complete picture of this iconic region in southwest France. A mosaic composed of almost 111,000 hectares, Bordeaux is France's largest AOC vineyard and home to 65 different appellations that produce wines in a variety of styles and prices. And one of the most buzzed about and intriguing appellations is Côtes de Bordeaux. Officially born in 2009, the Côtes de Bordeaux AOC may be the new kid on the Bordeaux block but vines have been planted there since the 2nd century. Côtes de Bordeaux consists of 5 clearly identified regions: Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon, Francs, and Sainte-Foy. 

Summertime really ignites my interest in trying new wines and I recently had the pleasure of tasting several Côtes de Bordeaux wines with sommelier Yannick Benjamin. Passionate and very knowledgable about the region, Yannick describes Côtes de Bordeaux wines as "Extremely terroir driven. They have a true sense of place." He also praises the "hands on approach" of the winemakers. For Yannick, Côtes de Bordeaux's authentically crafted wines at accessible price points make them ideal "gateway wines" for exploring Bordeaux. 

From fresh & crisp whites to fruity & earthy reds, you can sip Côtes de Bordeaux from the start to the end of a meal. True to their Bordeaux heritage, blending is a signature of the Côtes wines. Reds are mainly crafted from Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Sauvignon is the major grape variety for the white wines, blended with Sémillon and Muscadelle. Representing each of the Côtes de Bordeaux regions, I tasted five wines with Yannick. Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours, Le Blanc Bonhomme 2016
AOC Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux ($20)
A blend of Sauvignon Blanc (50%) and Semillon (50%), this refreshing and elegant white wine is from Blaye's largest certified biodynamic estate and is produced by fifth-generation brother & sister winemakers Guillaume and Rachel Hubert. Fresh and full with gorgeous flavors of honey, tropical fruit, zippy acidity, and clean minerality, this is a lovely introduction to Côtes! 

Château Suau 2015
AOC Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux 2015 ($25)
With vineyards located on the highest point of Cadillac, at an altitude of 330 feet, Château Suau began converting to organic farming in 2008. Since 2014, all vintages have been produced under the direction of famed winemaker & consultant Michel Rolland. Few red grapes can match Merlot's plush juiciness and this luscious red bolsters that softness with structure from a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon, so that the wine has finesse and not flab. Rich black fruit flavors are revved up with hints of licorice and finely knit tannins. 



Château Pitray Cabernet Franc 2015
AOC Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux ($18)
In a land of blends, this 100% Cabernet Franc stands out. Sexy and supple, there's nothing shy about this ripe and luscious red. Juicy, fruit-driven, with an engaging earthiness, this Cab Franc is the epitome of easygoing elegance. Established in the 14th century, Château Pitray is a 247-acre estate owned by the Simrad de Pitray family -- one of Bordeaux's oldest vineyard owning families. 



Château Les Charmes-Godard 2015
AOC Francs Côtes de Bordeaux ($18)
A blend of Semillon (50%), Sauvignon Gris (25%), and Sauvignon Blanc (25%); this is no boring white wine. Full-bodied and crisp with layers of flavor; from lemon and honeysuckle, to white peach and verbena. The 16-acre Les Charmes-Godard property was purchased by Nicolas Thienpont and his brothers in 1988.

Château Couronneau 2015
AOC Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux ($19)
Purchased by Christophe and Bénédicte Piat in 1994, they converted the vineyards  of the 98-acre Château Couronneau estate to organic farming in 1999 and to biodynamic in 2012. A blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), this red displays a gorgeous balance between ripe & dark fruit and savory vanilla and earthy flavors. Firm but fleshy.

The Lighter Side of Bordeaux: White Wines With Style & Substance

The Wonder Women of Bordeaux - Valérie Vialard (Château Latour Martillac), Valérie Lavigne (University of Bordeaux, Institute of Vine and Sciences), Corinne Comme (Château du Champ des Treilles), and Cécile Ha (Wines of Bordeaux). 

Winemaking isn't for the weak. From the vine to the cellar; authentic winemaking demands patience, intuition, innovation, and a multitude of strengths. A group of women winemakers from Bordeaux have proven themselves in possession of all these traits, and more, as they challenge the notion that wines from Bordeaux are overpriced, old-fashioned, and always red. While hoity-toity wines remain an important part of Bordeaux's identity, the region isn't stuck in a time warp. Bordeaux is also home to modern and accessibly priced wines and I was reminded by these dynamic winemakers that its fantastic dry white wines should not be overlooked.

Located in Southwest France along the Atlantic coast, Bordeaux produces all styles of wine and dry whites represent about 9% of the total production - almost 58 million bottles. Although single varietal offerings of Sauvignon Blanc have become increasingly popular, Bordeaux whites are usually blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon; small amounts of Muscadelle sometimes play a supporting role.

Native to the region, Sauvignon Blanc is often the main grape in dry white Bordeaux blends and brings freshness, high acidity, and vibrant aromas of grapefruit, lemon, tropical fruits, herbs, and grass. Sémillon balances out Sauvignon Blanc's zest with texture, roundness, aging potential and beguiling aromas of apricot and honey. Muscadelle is rarely more than 10% of the blend but just a small amount can enhance the wine with aromatic complexity. 

The warmer weather is the perfect season to explore crisp, aromatic, and refreshing dry white wines from Bordeaux. The wines may incorporate the same grapes in their blend but each winemaker does so in unique combinations that best express their vision and terroir. From fresh and fruity to more structured and mineral-driven wines, there really is a white Bordeaux for every palate, meal, and occasion. Château du Champ des Treilles Vin Passion 2016 ($15) is an impressive wine at an incredibly accessible price. A blend of essentially equal parts of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle; this nuanced white wine beautifully expresses the character of its 68-year-old vines and limestone & clay soils. 

I had the pleasure of tasting this lovely white Bordeaux with winemaker Corinne Comme. In 1997, Corinne and her husband Jean-Michel took over the familial vineyards from his grandfather and they opted to put their belief in biodynamics to practice. In addition to her work as a viticulturist, Corrine travels the world consulting estates on their conversions to biodynamic winemaking.  

Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours 2016 ($24)
A balanced and expressive blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes that were farmed on the largest certified biodynamic estate in Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux. Full-bodied with impressive minerality and freshness. 



Cháteau Latour Martillac 2015 ($36)
Creamy, smooth, and a little smoky - a very nuanced and sensual blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. 



Château Roquefort 2016 ($13)
This vivacious wine is mostly Sauvignon Blanc with a dash of Sémillon. Luscious and full with juicy tropical fruit flavors and perky acidity. 



Clos des Lunes Lune Blanche 2015 ($18)
Normally second fiddle, Sémillon (70%) has the starring role in this blend and Sauvignon Blanc plays an important supporting role at 30%. Crafted from grapes  grown in a vineyard located in the Sauternes region, which is renowned for Bordeaux's legendary sweet wines, this dry white wine impressively balances the line between complexity and easy drinkability. Fresh, mineral, and juicy with a satisfying and sassy tinge of salinity.

I try my best to avoid clichés when I write but I have to say it - winemaker Diane Flamand exudes that timeless elegance and chic style that many French women seem to be born with - the ever elusive and captivating je ne sais quoi.  So it isn't too surprising that the lovely Bordeaux wines that Diane crafts for Légende have that same authentic sophistication. Of course, Légende also has an impressive pedigree - the winery is part of the legendary Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). The Légende concept started in the 1990's with the goal of offering consumers everyday elegance and an opportunity to experience Bordeaux's different terroirs and tastes. 




Many American consumers remain a bit intimidated by Bordeaux and assume that all wines from this famous region in France's southwest must cost a small fortune. Not true. The Légende wines offer Bordeaux elegance at an accessible price. Recently, I had the pleasure of exploring the wines of Légende at a tasting hosted by Diane during her visit to New York City. Bordeaux is famous for its artful red blends and Légende is a stellar example. This round and juicy blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) has silky tannins, rich fruit, and a hint of earthiness from the deft use of oak. 



Légende Médoc 2015 ($26.99)
A robust blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%), this wine from the Médoc peninsula, about 60 km from Bordeaux, is a step up in texture and complexity but still very approachable. Full-bodied with luscious dark berry flavors, a hint of sweet spices, and a subtle smokiness.   



Légende Saint-Emilion 2014 ($44.99)
Juicy and plummy Merlot (85%) dominates this supple blend but a kiss of Cabernet Franc (15%) and a touch of oak adds elegant texture and complexity. 

Légende Pauillac 2014 ($54.99)
The prestigious Pauillac appellation is renowned for wines that marry power and structure with grace and excellent aging potential. Winemaker Diane Flamand describes this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Merlot (30%) as a "more approachable Pauillac." Precisely structured but full of life, this wine hits all of the high notes - rich fruit, spice, well-integrated tannins, and an impressively long finish. 



 It was an absolute pleasure to meet Diane and to explore Bordeaux via the elegant wines of Légende. These are wonderful wines that I would not hesitate to share with wine lovers at all levels. Novices will appreciate the easy drinkability of Légende and connoisseurs will recognize the nuances and quality winemaking. 

Taste the Terroir: The Bordeaux Wines of Château Olivier

Surrounded by moats and an immense forest, Château Olivier is a fairy-tale setting rooted in the reality of serious winemaking. Owned by the Bethmann family since 1886 on a property dating back to the Middle Ages, Château Olivier is fully committed to crafting wines that express the diversity of their terroir in Bordeaux -- their estate has thirteen different soil types that beautifully influence the flavor profile of their wines. A Grand Cru Classé de Graves in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Olivier is classified in red and white wines. 

Bordeaux's legendary status often intimidates consumers but you don't have to be a wine geek to appreciate the beauty of the wines. And contrary to popular belief, not all Bordeaux wines cost a small fortune. The wines of Château Olivier are not exorbitantly priced yet still rich in finesse and elegance.

A charming and refreshing blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle that is a perfect match with the warmer temps and lighter foods of spring and summer. Crisp minerality adds structure to vibrant citrus and stone fruit flavors.

Bordeaux is big on tradition but that doesn't mean that there isn't room for change. Mother Nature was the catalyst for a tremendous innovation at Château Olivier when a 6-hectare plot of compact gravel, the ideal soil base for Cabernet Sauvignon, was discovered on the property in 2002. This special plot, named Bel-Air, has been a major game-changer for their wines and now represents close to 25% of the Grand Vin. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot is round and juicy, the rich fruit flavors are balanced by savory and earthy accents. 

If your travels take you to Bordeaux, Château Olivier welcomes visitors -- no need to sneak in via the moat! Cheers!  
 

Sip Like Royalty: Fabulous Fronsac Wines from Château de La Dauphine

Once upon a time there was a lovely princess who had a craving for the finest wine in the land. The royal thirst of Maria Josepha of Saxony, the Dauphine of France and the mother of Louis XVI, led her to Château de La Dauphine in Fronsac. Surely, the reputation of these superb wines, from a vineyard that coincidentally shared her name, proved irresistible to La Dauphine. One of the oldest wine-producing areas in Bordeaux, in the 18th century wines from Fronsac were the most highly prized and expensive wines in the kingdom.

Today, the wines of Fronsac may not have the larger-than-life mystique (and price) of Bordeaux appellations like Margaux and St. Emilion, but the region offers high quality wines that don't require a royal budget to enjoy. One of the largest properties in Fronsac, the history of Château de La Dauphine can be traced back to the 17th century and it has only changed hands a few times. In 2015, the property was purchased by the Labrune family and they remain committed to carrying on the previous family's legacy of producing high-quality biodynamic wines that authentically express the finesse of the terroir.

Château de La Dauphine grows Merlot and Cabernet Franc at their 130 acre organic vineyard, located on Bordeaux's Right Bank in one of the meandering loops of the Dordogne River. The wines are produced in their ultra-modern facility that respects the integrity of the fruit. I recently had the opportunity to meet with Marion Merker, a representative of the Château, and she stated that their commitment to organic & biodynamic production "is a way to protect employees, community, and consumers." Marion also said that "wine is to share, to enjoy, to taste." I absolutely agree and with their wines priced in the $18-$35 range, Château de La Dauphine makes it easy to spread the joy!

 

 

The wines are absolutely food-friendly and paired beautifully with the meal that we shared at New York City's famed Gotham Bar & Grill. Château de La Dauphine will certainly add a certain ooh la la to your meals at home! 


Château de La Dauphine 2012 is their first vintage produced in collaboration with famed oenologist Michel Rolland and also the first year of their conversion to organic farming. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, it displays that Rolland style of full-bodied but graceful wines with pure and luscious fruit. An elegant but unpretentious wine, it is velvety and smooth with rich flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant, and dark cherry. The beauty of Château de La Dauphine is that the blend is always 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, so it really allows you to explore the unique qualities of each vintage. The 2010 vintage displays fresh dark fruit flavors along with touches of licorice and spice. 2009 is a bit creamier with hints of vanilla and dried fruits.

If you're planning a trip to France, Château de La Dauphine is only 40km from Bordeaux and welcomes visitors (by appointment) for tours, workshops, and lunches. It's worth the trip - they have been awarded gold level prizes for Best of Wine Tourism and even for the lunches served in the property's various picturesque settings. It certainly sounds like everyone gets the royal treatment at Château de La Dauphine!       

Be Bordô Offers a Fresh and Modern Expression of Bordeaux Wines

Don't let Stéphane Quien's polished demeanor fool you - this French vintner is a bit of a rebel. His fun and affordable collection of wines, Be Bordô, completely challenge the notion that Bordeaux is always stuffy, confusing, and expensive. Be Bordô doesn't pretend to compete with the legendary wines from Bordeaux's top châteaux but offers a playful and tasty option that won't break the bank - each bottle has a suggested price of $11.99. Although the wines are modestly priced, Stéphane is committed to quality and selected Château Merlet and winemaker Pierre Laroche as his partners in this venture. Be Bordô has access to some of the finest fruit and terroirs across all of the major Bordeaux appellations.


Stéphane is no newbie to the industry - his family's legacy as influential European merchants can be traced back to the 18th century. He describes Be Bordô as a "French alternative to New World wines" because it presents the classic grapes of Bordeaux in a more modern way. These young wines are meant to drink now and are crafted to express the freshness of Bordeaux's classic grapes instead of the influences of oak and long aging. 

Bordeaux is famous for blends and Be Bordô carries on that tradition. Be Bordô Sauvignon Blanc (Le Crisp White) is a breezy, citrusy, and refreshing blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc with 15% Semillon. Be Bordô Merlot (Le Fruity Red) deftly combines 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon to create a supple and juicy wine that pleasantly lingers on the palate. Be Bordô Cabernet Sauvignon (Le Deep Red) includes 15% Merlot  - it is a more robust wine with a touch of spice on the finish but still lively and fruit-forward.

It's no secret that the wines of Bordeaux enjoy an exalted status among connoisseurs and collectors willing to spend impressive sums on these celebrated wines from the southwest of France. However, the big Bordeaux surprise is that the region produces an incredible selection of excellent wines at very affordable prices. These wines aren't just for drinkers with deep pockets - for less than $20 you can sip a bit of that Bordeaux magic!

Lest you think Bordeaux is old-fashioned and fussy, modestly priced Bordeaux wines are showing up in some very cool and unexpected places. Bordeaux has been poured at dinners and tastings at the annual Harlem EatUp! festival since its inception in 2015. Harlem EatUp! was co-founded by renowned Chef Marcus Samuelsson and Mary Gorman-McAdams (Master of Wine and market advisor to the Bordeaux Wine Council) was the catalyst for Bordeaux's partnership with the festival. The wines poured at the festival showed that modestly priced Bordeaux is still of excellent quality and can pair beautifully with a wide variety of cuisine from soul food to sushi, and Italian to Indian.




Bordeaux refers to the region and the wines produced there. Bordeaux's signature red grapes are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The white grapes are Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle.

I recently met with Mary and asked her to recommend five delicious and affordable Bordeaux wines. Here are Mary's picks!


Château La Mouliniere Rosé, Bordeaux 2015 ($10)
This lovely and well-structured rosé is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc,  and Merlot - a fantastic way to experience the red grapes that are the backbone of the classic Bordeaux red blend. Dry, fresh, and fruity with lovely flavors of raspberry and strawberry; this is a great summer sip. Built in the late 16th century, Château La Mouliniere is a single-estate vineyard located on the right bank of the Dordogne River near Saint-Emilion.



Château Marjosse, Entre-Deux-Mers, Blanc 2014 ($17)
This gorgeous white wine comes from an impressive pedigree - Château Marjosse is the home estate for Pierre Lurton - the managing director of two legendary First Growth Bordeaux estates (Château Cheval Blanc and Château d'Yquem). Entre-Deux-Mers means "between two seas" and refers to the area of Bordeaux between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. This refreshing white wine beautifully combines the region's signature grapes Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris, and Muscadelle to create a wine that Mary describes as "fruity and versatile" and with enough elegance and style to bring to a dinner party. 



Château Tour de Goupin, Bordeaux Blanc 2014 ($12)
Described as "dry with a light floral bouquet, crisp textures, and a clean finish," this blend of Sauvignon, Semillon, and Muscadelle is produced on an estate that avoids pesticides and chemicals in the vineyard. 



Château Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2012 ($15)
Château Recougne has produced wine for more than 400 years and its name is said to have come from King Henri IV in the early 17th century in "recognition" of the quality of its wines. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is described as "supple, round, and generous."



Château Capbern Gasqueton, Saint Estephe 2014 ($19)
Owned by the Gasqueton family for 10 generations, Château Capbern is known for producing charming wines with enough structure to age 10-20 years. Mary says that "you don't have to spend a lot of money to start a collection of wine. It isn't just a rich man's sport. Modest wines can age well." This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot is an incredibly affordable way to start your Bordeaux collection. "Hints of smoke, tobacco, licorice, mocha, and earthiness wrap around a core of dark fruit in an exuberant wine loaded with pure textural richness" that will develop beautifully over time.


La Cité du Vin

If you're planning a trip to France, now is an especially exciting time to visit Bordeaux - the stunning vineyards and elegant châteaux have a shiny new neighbor - La Cité du Vin. "An immersive and sensory adventure showcasing the cultures and civilizations of wine," La Cité du Vin is a stunning architectural statement that is meant to evoke the essence and soul of wine. Visitors can experience a variety of interactive experiences, art installations, restaurants, and plenty of wine! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bordeaux was #2 on The New York Times list "52 Places to Go in 2016" - impressive!

Sipping with a Legend: Michel Rolland and the Bordeaux Wines of André Lurton

From Mendoza to Tuscany, Napa to Rioja; there is a name that regularly rolls off the palates of many winemakers that I admire: Michel Rolland. Even The New York Times referred to Rolland as the world's most famous wine consultant. Observing that Rolland had collaborated in the creation of many wines that I enjoyed, I became increasingly intrigued and hoped that one day our paths would cross. Would I ever meet this French gentleman who had played such an important role in the production of wine around the world? Well, it seems that Bacchus, the god of wine, intervened on my behalf: my wish came to fruition thanks to a very special tasting hosted by Les Vignobles André Lurton and Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits at the acclaimed restaurant Daniel in NYC.  

During lunch at Daniel, I told Michel Rolland that it was a pleasure to meet him after encountering so many of his friends and colleagues in the wine world. When he replied that he also had his share of detractors, I told him what my Grandmother told me - when people are overly critical it often means that you're doing something right and shaking things up! 

André Lurton

It seems that Bacchus was also at work several years ago when Michel Rolland told a radio interviewer that he regretted never having worked with André Lurton - a legendary Bordeaux winemaker who was born in the middle of the harvest at his family's Château Bonnet and seemingly destined to devote a great portion of his life to viticulture. Lurton heard that radio interview and it prompted him to call Rolland and voila, it was the beginning of something special. Rolland has been a consulting oenologist at Les Vignobles André Lurton since the 2012 vintage.

Born into a winemaking family in Libourne (just 30 km from Bordeaux) and a graduate of the Bordeaux Faculty of Oenology, one could say that the wines of this region are in Rolland's DNA. His combination of technical skills, emotional connections to Bordeaux, and knowledge of the global market are a great match with Lurton. Lurton and Rolland working together to create wines that are truly magnifique seems like it was meant to be.

Les Vignobles André Lurton is comprised of ten different châteaux in the most prestigious appellations in Bordeaux. If you've been intimidated by wines from Bordeaux, give Lurton a swirl. Classic yet modern, the Lurton wines that I sipped at lunch with Mr. Rolland displayed great finesse, elegance, and drinkability. Yes, they are a great match with a gourmet meal prepared by Daniel Boulud but they can just as easily be enjoyed with a casual meal at home - these wines are sophisticated without being pretentious. I wouldn't shy away from pairing a glass with a juicy burger or steak.



Château Bonnet Reserve Red 2012 ($14.99)
A smooth and luscious blend of Merlot (59%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), and a dash of Cabernet Franc (1%). Rich and round with gorgeous flavors of blackcurrant and blackberry with a subtle hint of spice. A great match with lamb or even a hearty bowl of chili con carne. 



Château de Rochemorin 2012 ($33.99)
In the 18th century Château de Rochemorin belonged to the famous philosopher and writer Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquie and he was an enthusiastic ambassador of the wines produced there. I think he would be pleased with this 2012 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%) - an  elegant wine with ripe fruit and mineral flavors that are balanced by earthiness and spice.



Château La Louvière 2012 ($74.99)
The chateau dates back to the late 18th century architecture but winegrowing at Château La Louvière goes back more than 700 years. This soil has stories! A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Merlot (40%), and Petit Verdot (3%), this rich red wine has concentrated fruit flavors but it is graceful and not jammy.
