“Our family has devoted centuries of our life to the world of fine wines.”
Marchese Lamberto Frescobaldi, President, Tenuta Luce
For any lover of Italian wine, Frescobaldi needs no introduction. This noble Tuscan family's winemaking legacy spans more than 700 years, and they are committed to producing wines that celebrate Tuscany's beauty and diversity. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Marchese Lamberto Frescobaldi on Instagram Live about a relatively new but significant chapter in the family's history -- Tenuta Luce in Montalcino.
Founded 25 years ago as a collaboration with the Mondavi family, Tenuta Luce created Luce, Montalcino's first blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. The partnership with Mondavi ended in 2004 and Lamberto Frescobaldi has directed the project since then. The newly released 2017 vintage marks the 25th anniversary of this iconic vino. Watch the video of my conversation with Marchese Frescobaldi below, on YouTube, or Instagram Live to learn more about Tenuta Luce's history, winemaking philosophy and current vintages.
The 25th anniversary bottle of Luce is decorated with words inspired by Marchese Frescobaldi's father, Vittorio: “Here is the memory of the vineyard and of the work, of the earth, and of the sun, of listening to time and to the singing of the seasons.”
During our chat, we sipped Tenuta Luce 2017 ($135). "Appearing a deep ruby, on the nose it offers intense scents of ripe berry fruit and dark-fleshed fruit. With aging, Luce develops a minerally edge and the pungent fragrances of Mediterranean scrub. Its dense, velvety tannins contribute to the wine’s magnificent structure, while the palate, remarkably full-bodied, progresses into a notably lengthy finish."
We also sipped Luce Brunello di Montalcino 2015 ($155). 100% Sangiovese, it was crafted as a tribute to Montalcino and its traditions. "Here is a noble, forceful wine with significant ageing potential. Appearing ruby red with garnet highlights, Luce Brunello vaunts a vibrant acidity and spice-laden structure, while silky tannins gradually unfold on the palate, revealing an elegance and multi-layered complexity that drive to a lengthy, intense conclusion."
