One of the things that I love most about wine is that the learning never stops. There are so many unique grapes, regions, winemakers, and flavors that boredom is not an option. And, let's face it - a fine glass of wine can make a good day great and a bad day better!
This week I was introduced to Arnaldo Caprai - Wine Enthusiast's 2012 European Winery of the Year. Founded in 1971, this small but stellar Umbrian winery has achieved major recognition for their production of Sagrantino di Montefalco. Sagrantino is a red grape indigenous to central Italy and is known for big tannins. However, Arnaldo Caprai wines masterfully showcase and soften the tannins while also allowing the bold, juicy, and spicy notes of the Sagrantino grape to shine through. These wines can be enjoyed now but have the structure to age beautifully.
Winemaker Marco Caprai, the son of winery founder Arnaldo Caprai, is passionate about sharing Sagrantino di Montefalco with the world. I must say, he's a pretty charming guy!
If you find yourself in Umbria, you can schedule a tour and tasting at Arnaldo Caprai. Until then, look for their wonderful vino at a fine shop near you. Enjoy!
