The latest this and the coolest that is always at your fingertips in New York City but I love searching my hometown for those special places that have stood the test of time. When I received an invitation to spend a night at the Hotel Elysée , an iconic Manhattan hotel that was built in the 1920's, I jumped at the opportunity to immerse myself in the ambiance of a bygone era. Quicker than you could hum a Cole Porter tune, I hopped the 6 train to begin my delightful, de-lovely, and delicious getaway.
If location is everything, then the Hotel Elysée is truly blessed. Conveniently located at East 54th Street between Park and Madison Avenues, the Hotel Elysée is just steps away from the luxury shops on Fifth Avenue, the Museum of Modern Art, and St. Patrick's Cathedral. However, once you enter the doors of the Hotel Elysée and press the button in the wood paneled lift (with the decadent flocked wallpaper), you rise above the hustle and bustle. It is easy to see why Hotel Elysée was twice voted the "most romantic hotel in New York" by Citysearch and “Best Small New York Hotel” by Travel & Leisure magazine.
I've stayed in many hotels but when I entered my suite at the Hotel Elysée, my jaw literally dropped and I let out a very undignified squeal and proceeded to call several friends to brag about my gorgeous accommodations. I felt as if I had just entered the New York City apartment of my dreams, complete with beautiful hardwood floors, large windows, and antique furniture. My Parlor Suite consisted of a LARGE living room with a fireplace (non-working), dining table for six, a walk in closet, an extremely spacious bedroom, and a fully equipped kitchen. Add in the flat screen televisions and the wireless internet, and I was in heaven. I never wanted to leave. But alas, I did - I put on my little black dress and headed downstairs to the Monkey Bar.
Yes, THAT Monkey Bar. You see, the Hotel Elysée is home to the one and only Monkey Bar - a legendary restaurant that has been featured in Sex and the City and Mad Men. Vanity Fair's Graydon Carter is one of the Monkey Bar owners and celebrities flow as freely in this elegant establishment as the classic cocktails. And, you can experience the Monkey Bar in the privacy of your suite- they provide the room service at the Hotel Elysée.
