Just a few weeks ago I wrote a post about how I felt unsafe when I checked into a Marriott Hotel. In light of my concerns about hotel safety for women, I was stunned when I was informed that lawyers for the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa in Connecticut have filed court papers claiming that a woman who was raped by gunpoint in front of her two young children is to blame for this despicable act.
According to 1010 Wins, the court papers state that the victim "failed to exercise due care for her own safety and the safety of her children and proper use of her senses and facilities.''
Blaming the rape victim to avoid paying damages? This is shameless and sleazy behavior. Marriott, how could you permit your lawyers to represent you in this truly horrid manner? The rapist confessed to the 2006 crime and is serving 20 years in prison for his attack on the woman that occurred in her minivan in Marriott's parking garage. When will Marriott admit that they have a responsibility to protect their guests and not further traumatize this woman and her family? Simply shameless, I can't say it enough.
