Hoagie: long Italian roll + deli meat and cheese + garnish of lettuce, tomatoes and onions + a drizzle of oil & vinegar and a shake of oregano = DELICIOUS
Sandwiches may not be the sexiest of foods but these portable eats have calmed the hunger pangs of many a ravenous traveler. But when a town has a signature sandwich, the meal itself becomes the destination. Philadelphia can actually boast two legendary sandwiches - the cold Hoagie and the hot Cheesesteak. In fact, the Hoagie was declared Philly's official sandwich in 1992.
November 3rd is National Sandwich Day and Philly is making it easy to find the best Hoagies in town with online tools like the Philadelphia Hoagie Finder and Foodspotting.com. Both sites highlight traditional Hoagies and modern variations.
And, in case you're wondering why November 3rd was selected as National Sandwich Day, this date happens to be the birthday of John Montagu - the fourth Earl of Sandwich. Legend has it that the sandwich was created in the 18th century when the Earl asked his servants to serve his lunch meat between two slices of bread so that he could eat with one hand during a marathon gambling event.
So, if you're passing through Philly on November 3rd (or anytime), kick carb counting to the curb for a day, get dolled up in a not-so-snug black dress, and get cozy with a Hoagie!
