Are you craving Piquillo red peppers, Rosado wine and Iberian pork? Don't worry if you can't jet off to Spain right now - New York City and Washington, DC are celebrating cuisine from the Kingdom of Navarra from February 6 - 14.
Located in the north of Spain, Navarra borders the Basque Country, La Rioja, Aragon and the Pyrenees. Known worldwide for the running of the bulls in Pamplona and immortalized by Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises, the experts state that the "climate and topography make Navarra an extraordinarily fertile region…an historic distinctive cuisine with multi-national influences. Navarrese cooking incorporates local products of the highest quality, with a great variety of mushrooms and other fungi; superb meats, game, and fowl; Cantabrian fish; regional cheeses like Roncal, Aezcoa-Valcarlos and Idiazabal; and locally produced olive oil." I say, DELICIOUS!
During Navarra Gastronomic Week, acclaimed chefs and wine experts will host a variety of tastings and serve special menus. Participating restaurants in NYC include Boqueria, Casa Mono (one of my favorites), and Toledo. In DC, Jaleo, La Bodega, La Tasca and several other eateries are putting the spotlight on Navarra. Enjoy!
